Landscaping & Horticulture

Our learnership programmes are conducted over a minimum of 12 months, offering 30% theoretical and 70% practical instruction

In order to include the various specialized industries in the field of Horticulture, the unit standards within the learnerships are targeted to the specific sector specialization. These include Landscape Maintenance, Landscape Construction, Arboriculture, Plant Production, Interior Plantscape and Botanical Gardens Maintenance.

HEALTH AND SAFETY COMPLIANCE

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: SPORTS TURF MAINTENANCE NQF LEVEL 4 – SAQA ID. NO. 21024

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: LANDSCAPING – NQF LEVEL 4 – SAQA ID. NO. 21024

The qualification has been developed to fill the gap between degree level education and the lower NQF levels. The qualification comprises of Diploma subjects that offer the student a broad based knowledge of Horticulture, looking at aspects of:

1.	Landscape Construction – drainage and erosion, gradients, walling, rockeries, steps, creating mounds, earth shaping, hard surfaces.
2.	Principles of Plant and Soil Science – plant biology, soils and soil cultivation, soil amendments, soil nutrients.
3.	Garden Design – history of gardens, dynamic nature of gardens, plant identification and selection, design elements, design effects, collecting pre-planning information, drawing techniques, garden styles, furnishing and features.
4.	Landscape Irrigation – design, installation, system maintenance.
5.	Horticultural Machinery – tractors, compactors, cultivation equipment, chainsaws, brushcutters, hand held equipment, machinery maintenance.
6.	Site Safety – the health and safety at work act, safety organization and control.
7.	Planting and Establishment and Maintenance – planting selection, shrub and groundcover planting, tree planting, planting maintenance, fertilization programmes, pest and disease control, lawn construction principles, lawn maintenance.
8.	Arboriculture – selection and tree planting, formative pruning, tree surveys, mature tree care.
9.	Labour Management – the basic conditions of employment act, principles of supervision.
10.	Landscape Management – contractual law, contract pricing, contract planning, variation orders, completion certificates, payment schedules, project management.

The qualification is available to existing employees within the industry or to individuals who wish to enter the industry. The qualification can be conducted through distance learning or at a landscaping facility, where the student can gain practical exposure.

The National Certificate in Horticulture is a challenging qualification. The student will have to obtain a good level of competence in order to graduate. The emphasis is for a student to exit the Level 4 qualification with a good knowledge of the industry and for the student to obtain a highly credible qualification that is recognized by professional bodies representing the industry.

THE QUALIFICATION

The qualification has been developed by BC Landscape Training and Consultancy and is supported by the South African Landscapers Institute, to provide an education in aspects of Landscape Construction and Maintenance.
